Baby Boy Finally in My Arms šŸ’™

Sarah • Mom of 2- expecting a 3rd in March ā€˜23

39 very long weeks were finally up! We had an induction scheduled (due to previous rapid labor) and my mom flew to TX from Canada to lend a hand with my kids and meet the newest grand baby. We settled in for our last night of sleep only to get a call around midnight that the hospital beds were full and they were canceling our induction. I was devastated. But I was ā€œfirst in lineā€ should anything open up. I barely got back to sleep when they called again to tell me they believed they would still get me in that day which was a relief since I had everything ready and my mom had come from so far.

Around 5 they called again to tell me to come at 7am… a whole hour later than scheduled šŸ™„ but now I had gotten very little very stressful sleep.

The plan was to break my water and allow me to try to go into labor on my own and avoid Pitocin if possible. Since this was baby #3 and I have had rapid labors we thought we had a good chance.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work. Baby was too high and the contractions I did get weren’t strong enough to bring him down and I knew it so we tried a little bit of everything to coax him down and increase contractions but he was comfortable where he was and just wasn’t interested in cooperating. My DR graciously allowed me to keep trying even after very little progress at the 4 hour mark but after 6 hours we had only progressed one centimeter and I knew I was worn out from sleepless nights (I’d been struggling in the sleep department for a week) and decided to go ahead and get an epidural at the same time as starting pitocin so I could rest before meeting my boy.

That didn’t happen either. Well, the pitocin did and we got things moving but shortly after my epidural my blood pressure dropped below the acceptable level and although they were able to give me meds to bring it up they had to turn off the epidural.

That’s when baby started stressing out. The nurse had me turning this way and that to try to appease him but he was obviously not pleased.

The pitocin had done its job in short order- I was fully dilated and baby was at the +1 station. My Dr was called as we continued to try different things to give baby more room and keep him happier.

My epidural was still vaguely there helping but they hadn’t been able to turn it back on with baby being in some distress. I warned the nurse that I couldn’t hold off pushing much longer and thankfully my Dr arrived and in short order we were ready.

A few rounds of pushing and it was over. He was screaming at all of us in anger as soon as he exited his warm home and joined the world.
