Anyone doing that genetic testing thing?

My midwife gave this huge lecture about why we need to get it done, she explained that it would help us decide if we want to terminate the pregnancy. My SO looked her straight in the eye and said "the baby will be loved regardless if something is " wrong" with them, it's our child and nothing would make us terminate this pregnancy!" And she snickered at him and said "don't you want to know if you're going to have difficulties raising the child?" In which I butted in with "you're going to have 'difficulties' with ANY child".. Anyone else like that? Or did I bitch out my midwife for nothing?

I would choose another midwife. I mean sure she could think that or make that an option for herself but she shouldn't judge or push her opinions onto you. That's very strange as most midwives take a more natural, loving approach. Good luck!!!

Yes, you have a right to refuse the tests, and she shouldn't have discussed the sensitive topic like that with you two when she could see you both getting upset - I'm sorry. We did the tests just to find out if we did need to take extra classes on how to help a child with difficulties.

We didn't.. I would have bitch slapped that woman... Thats not professional in the least... I can see her supporting it to give you options and to prepare but to snicker and roll her eyes at keeping a child with disabilities is horribly horribly wrong... Id complain...

Wow, your midwife is...rude. The whole point of a midwife is to have the opportunity to make your own decisions about your child without the doctor-forcing-stuff-down-your-throat, right?

The Physician Assistant at my OB office kept telling me that I should do it and I continuously refused because I will love my baby regardless. So you did not do anything wrong. You should have cussed her out!

We did the genetic testing by blood test just so we are aware but made it very clear termination and adoption are NEVER options. We have a son with autism and have learned it's better to be as prepared as possible because getting services and medical help, equipment, etc. is expensive and takes time but it's a personal choice. If you don't feel comfortable with it don't let them pressure you.

My OBGYN gave me the option and I chose to do it since it was covered by insurance. I just did it for peace of mind and my own curiosity. Obviously the baby will be loved no matter what but I wanted to be prepared. It's totally your choice and it sounds like the midwife was being pushy!

Frankly I'm appalled by your midwife! I can't believe she said that and acted in such a way! I'd personally find another one after that! And kudos to you and your husband for voicing your feelings and standing by what you believe! And I had the test done but it's mostly because I'm a big worrier and I want to know baby is ok, (obviously I'd keep it either way) because my ob told me there's things you can do in certain cases if baby has a problem that can help depending on what they find. And I'm getting close to the point they require further tests because of maternal age anyway...😕 (I'm not old but that certainly makes me feel it! Lol)

I would not put up with any doctor talking to me like that... especially a midwife. My midwife told me from the beginning that she will not pressure me to do anything I don't want to do and that she is just there to support me and back me up with my pregnancy/birth plan.
