Whats the deal with crib bumper pads ..???!!

Question

Ok.. I'm a first time mom .. & i had a friend of mine give me an extra pair of bumper pads she had .. She has a set on her own crib for her 6 month old ..
I've read so many conflicting things online .. Some things say they're dangerous & can cause suffocation .. & then other things say its dangerous not to have them on the crib, incase of bumping their heads .. Or getting limbs caught in the bars .. 
 As a first time mom its frustrating trying to figure out what to use & what not to use .. What to do .. & how to do it! Since google didn't help answer my question, can somebody on here help?!

Crib bumpers are pretty dangerous. It's seriously just for looks. If you have a newer crib between the bars is a set standard size where arms and limbs and heads won't get stuck. We never used them and don't plan on it with our third. They're not going to bonk their head hard enough that you would even notice.

I had crib bumpers on from the 1st day BUT my son didn't start sleeping in his crib till he was 4 months old ( we slept him in a pack n play for the first 4 months in our room, made night time feedings easier for us). I bought the breathable mesh ones and never had a problem. I personal wouldn't use the "decorative" ones. The only downfall to the mesh ones is I had to constantly pull them up when my son started to stand because he'd try to stand on them to get out of his crib. Other than that though they were great! I still use them to help keep his binkie in his crib 😂

If you think about it.. What would you prefer? That you baby's arm get stuck and he cry for a few seconds till you get to the crib or he suffocate and you not realize till it's too late? (How my doctor put it when I asked)

If people want to use them only for aesthetic purposes, could tie them on the outside of crib?

I know right?! All the conflicting information is annoying! I didn't use mine bc the risk of SIDS for the first year, then I put it in and it's still there at 18 months. Otherwise he will smash his head on the bars! He's old enough now I don't worry about it, but the first year I'd say keep everything out of there! I even just recently started using blankets! Lol

I used the breathable bumpers, sold at target. They soften the sides of the crib but have tiny holes to prevent suffocation/sids etc. I say better safe then sorry

I am not 100% sure cause I've heard the same things as you but for my daughter when she was an infant I went to target & bought a thin breathable bumper. It probably wouldn't help too much with bonking their heads but it helps her not fall through the crib slats. That was our biggest issue I'd go in and her legs would be through or her arms.

Babies can get stuck and suffocate in the bumpers. I had bumpers on my 6 year old's crib but they didn't do anything but look cute. I mean, how hard are they actually going to bump in to the crib when they roll over? Lol

I'm foregoing them on my newest son's crib and I really can't think of a baby I've known in the past few years that has had crib bumpers.

I used them with my older two with zero issues....but have decided to forego them this time baby. If I find  an issue not having them then I will go ahead and get some, but I am going to wait and see.

I am absolutely refusing to use them... I feel like the cons outweigh the pros by quite a bit... I personally would rather my baby girl get a goose egg on her head then lose her because she had her face under the bumper pad smothering her to death... They have the mesh liners that are thin and completely breathable to keep their little arms and legs from getting caught or stuck so that's the only thing we will be using when she gets to the age where she rolls all around the crib..
