do I need to swaddle my 1 month old

I’m a new mom my baby just got home for the nicu last week, he’s a month old today. Do I need to swaddle him?  Does it help anything or is it just to mimic him being in the stomach? I have no since he was swaddled in the nicu. But he sometimes kicks the swaddle off and I have to wake up several times to fix it

In Spain I've never seen any babies being swaddled, so I'd say no, you don't need to.

Neither of my kids liked it so we never did it. My husband's aunt had some weird theory they'd grow up and hate the world because they weren't given the comfort of being swaddled as babies. Granted they are 5 and 1 1/2 now and seem to have no hated for the world 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣 they're still hella snuggly and cuddly. They just don't like being tightly wrapped. In fact most nights they both still kick their blankets off.

You don’t have to if you don’t want to.
Both of my babies slept best when swaddled, so I swaddled them as long as I could. We only used Velcro swaddle sacks though. If you are not super confident/competent at wrapping a swaddle blanket, don’t use one.

You don’t have to swaddle you baby if you prefer not too. My first born hated being swaddled. He was a winter baby so I wanted him to stay warm in his sleep without cranking the heat or adding blankets because that’s a big no no obviously, so I opted for sleep sacs with him instead and he liked those. Maybe that’s something you could try! 
My daughter on the other hand, loved being swaddled. The only benefit I noticed with swaddling her was that she’d sleep longer stretches swaddled. Otherwise she would jerk and wriggle around and wake herself up. 
So it really comes down to what works for you and your baby! You know him best. If you sense that he doesn’t prefer to be swaddled and/or it’s interfering with yours and his sleep, there’s no harm in doing away with swaddling! ❤️
