When does school teach them their alphabets

My son is four and not in preschool. I keep trying to have him learn to read and write with me but he refuses to learn EVERY DAY. No matter how many times I try with him he just plays around or gets frustrated. Does kindergarten teach them this? How can I get him to learn to be prepared for school next year?

I have been told by many specialists that you don’t need to have your child who is entering kindergarten to know their letters. That’s why they “recommend” but it is not an absolute necessity for them to go to kindergarten.

Writing letters is still crazy early because they lack fine motor skills, but they should be able to say the alphabet and recognize most of the letters between 3-4 years old. Same for numbers. ￼
Kindergarten will teach them as well, but by the end if kindergarten they should have all the letters and their sounds plus sight words.

My daughter was exactly like your son, so I put her in preschool and that helped a lot. Now she is in kindergarten and knows all her alphabet but she struggles with numbers so we are working on that.

I homeschool my kids. My 5yo knew his alphabet and numbers at 2.5, and got really good at 3. From 4yrs to 5yrs we worked on reading, writing, math, phonics, and drawing. He can do basic addition and subtraction, read many words on sight, can sound out most words, knows his entire alphabet, can count to 100 forwards and backwards, writes his name and practices other words daily, memorized key phone numbers and our address in case of emergency and he is capable of opening my phone and making calls to those key numbers just in case the need ever arises, he also can spell many words without looking at them. I started working with him when he was 2, so he started early. 
My 2yo we are working on shapes, colors, coloring/drawing, numbers 1-10 and the alphabet.

With teaching these days, kids are expected to know a grade higher than what they are actually in. Preschool they start learning abcs, numbers and end with starting to read sight words. They are expected to know and be tested on letter sounds beginning of kindergarten. Also be tested on reading sight words. Teaching is not like what it was when we were in school, it is much more advanced. Honestly I feel they push these kids too hard. 
My oldest is in first grade now and she is reading sentences, adding and subtracting etc etc. They started adding and subtracting the 2nd half of the kindergarten year.

Kindergarten they are learning to actually read words. Alphabet should be pre school or earlier.
