Was he just wanting me to chase him?

There’s this guy I’ve been messing with for 8 months. We tried to be together but he just messed around and wasn’t as interested in me. Then he came back and we were supposed to just be having sex but then he would be weird about how I dressed, my friends, male attention I got, etc. And I started to catch feelings so I told him, ofc it wasn’t mutual. Says he cares for me but not romantically. Right around then, he also did some things that made me lose a lot of interest in even him being around. So I tried to take space from him and just would answer way less often. Especially now that he says he wants a week or so break since he had a sinus infection and wants to be 100% symptoms free I thought it would be easier. But now he seems upset about that too. Like will double text after an hour. Then will triple text after that. Even quadruple one time. And if I don’t answer his goodnight texts he’ll ask what happened that I didn’t. I just don’t get it. He didn’t want me, so why does he want all my attention? Especially if we’re not having sex for an undetermined amount of time?
