Postpartum Preeclampsia
This may be long but I hope it's helpful for someone. If you don't have a blood pressure cuff at home, BUY ONE!!! If you feel even slightly off after having your baby, LISTEN TO YOUR BODY PLEASE!!!
I was at an increased risk for preeclampsia during my pregnancy because I had it with my last pregnancy. I had a few elevated pressures throughout but it never developed into preeclampsia so my doctor wasn't concerned about it and neither was I. On Christmas eve my water broke and I went into labor and had my beautiful baby girl early Christmas morning. Immediately after having her I spiked a fever that they assumed was caused by an infection from my water being broken too long. They also noticed my blood pressure had spiked a bit. Staying somewhere in the 160's. They gave me meds for the infection, meds to help with blood clotting, and just monitored my blood pressure. After two days my pressure was fine and we were finally discharged. They told me to follow up with my OB in a week. Yesterday around 4am I was up feeding my baby and just felt off. None of the classic signs of high blood pressure or preeclampsia like blurry vision or anything I just felt off so I decided to take my blood pressure. It was 177/114 so I came to the hospital. When I got here my pressure was in the 180's. They kept me a few hours and got my pressure down. They gave me a prescription and sent me home. Later that night I took my medicine as prescribed but not long after I had just an off feeling again. My pressure was 138/108. Not as bad as it has been before so I decided not to panic. But then came that general off feeling again so after about 30 minutes I checked again and my pressure was 189/119. My husband and I left our kids with my sister ( we were able to bring our newborn with us) and we rushed back to labor and delivery. When we got here I was at 192/116 and was rushed into a room, told by a nurse not to panic but there's going to be a lot going on all. I tried not to panic like she said while the room was filling with doctors and nurses asking me questions, hooking me up with things, giving me an IV and explaining how different meds are going to make me feel horrible but they're needed to quickly bring down my pressure and keep me from having a stroke or seizure. Now here I am 8 days postpartum in the hospital because I developed preeclampsia postpartum. I didn't get stomach pain, blurry vision, headache, or swelling that they told me to look out for. It was completely silent. The doctor here kept telling me they were glad I came back because this could've been a lot worse had my pressure kept rising at home. It honestly was the most worrying experience I've had. Now their plan is to basically just try other BP meds and see what works with my body. I just want to tell you guys how it happened to me because there might be another mom like me who doesn't' get the classic symptoms they tell you to look out for but just has an off feeling. Listen to that feeling please and get checked out!!! I hope I don't sound like I'm trying to freak anyone out because that isn't my intention. I just didn't know this could happen and I don't want another mom to simply feel off like I did and ignore it. Thanks for reading!
