Asking dr to be induced due to insurance?

So it’s my first year at a new job and due to me not working there a full year I don’t qualify for FMLA. And from my company’s contract they will no longer cover me insurance as of 3/1/24 and this baby is due 2/24/24. We will go under my husband’s insurance but we hate it and know that under my insurance we will have no expenses for baby’s birth but under his we will have to pay a couple grand.
Is it unheard of to ask my obgyn if we might induce right before my due date? Has anyone done this before?

I asked mine to induce for insurance. She had no problem doing it at 39 weeks. My water broke on its own so we didn’t need to, but she was willing.

Many OBs will offer (and most insurances will cover) elective inductions starting at 39 weeks. We considered elective induction with my first for a similar reason (due date was near the end of the insurance year) and my OB said it comes up VERY frequently, so I don’t think they will be surprised by the request. The ARRIVE study even showed a slightly increased chance of vaginal birth with elective induction at 39 weeks compared to expectant management, so it medically isn’t an unreasonable decision.
If it were the difference of thousands of dollars and baby was “fully cooked” (>39 weeks), I personally would strongly consider it.

Inductions should not be offered or thought of if there is no medical reason for it. Insurance situation is not reason for induction.
