What to say to a 5 yr old?

Question

When I explain to him sometimes “that’s not what God wants you to do,” he comes back at me with “well we all sin and God forgives us” 
I need a wise response. He’s right about that, but I just want to further elaborate.

“Yes but God is not pleased with us when we sin ”

Read him the story of Samuel when he was a boy loving in the tabernacle. Good was not pleased with Eli’s sons bc they were wicked & He wasn’t pleased with Eli either bc he didn’t punish his sons. So God isn’t pleased with us when we sin & He isn’t pleased with the parents when they don’t give consequences for those sins. We want to b please God & make Him happy & one way children can do that is by obeying their parents. We can also think God for all the wonderful things we have like food & a warm bed!

I have 6 and 4 year old boys. My response would be “that’s misusing Gods grace. And yes, he forgives us but there will still be consequences on earth for our actions. We are to use Gods grace to shine as lights in the world, not make our sin ok.”

The whole book of Romans. Especially ch 6 speaks on this. Paul answers that question.

[1] What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? [2] By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?
Read it to understand it for yourself, then find some good ways to explain it to your child.

He’s not right though. Gods forgiveness is not to be tested, or taken for granted. You can’t willfully sin and say, “well it’s ok because God will forgive me”, that is being morally dishonest. And God won’t actually forgive you if you’re only sorry just to save your butt. The only thing you can be sorry about after that is believing in a devils lie.

I used to tell my son “while yes, God forgives us, it still makes Him really sad when we know something is sin and we choose to do it anyway rather than choosing what is right.”
He’s now 8 and catches himself before doing things, so I don’t have to remind him.
