Do you feel it protects you more if SO left if you are married and have kids?

Question

I always thought that my mom atleast eventually got something/child support from my dad because they were married 
It’s a morbid thought, but I would have been devastated if I had a baby out of wedlock and less protected by law 
My views are distorted because of what my mom went through. I would like to hear from those that decided not to get married and why? Were you ever worried about your partner leaving and what would happen if you had kids? Do you feel it does protect you more to be married? 
I’m not trying to start a battle here- truly just want different perspectives

Marriage has nothing to do with child support. My parents were never married and my dad paid child support faithfully my whole life until I was 18. If their name is on the birth certificate or there is dna proof, they have to pay child support if deemed by the courts. 
That being said, marriage 100% protects you legally in many other cases. I absolutely believe two people that have or plan to have children, or other assets together like owning a home, should be legally married. Medical emergencies, accidents, death to your partner, if you are not legally married, you are not entitled to anything unless by some miracle, your partner jumped through all the legal hoops to ensure your legal standing (which is complicated and different for everything- insurance, bank account, retirement accounts, asset titles, deeds, power of attorney, ect.,). You are not legally the next of kin of you are not married and even if you’re listed on everything, the legal next of kin can contest it in court. 
This is just from what I learned going through the court system as a legal heir but I’m definitely not an expert- this is just from my personal experience.

Look up the laws in your state because every state is different. Some states, both parents have equal custody regardless of marital status, some the mother automatically has custody if unmarried, and some states neither parent has legal custody until established by the courts. And custody and child support are two different issues in most states. Either way, you should think hard about whether you want marriage or not if you’re only thinking about it in regards to children- children eventually grow up and leave…and then they are a non-factor in the actual relationship.

Marriage has plenty of benefits legally ☺️ but with custody, it would depend on the situation. Normally if not married , the law usually favors the woman and the man gets visitation rights unless he really fights . It’s horrible how injustice works .

i’m not sure exactly what you’re asking, protected from what? if you’re asking about custody, you would typically get split custody between parents if you were married, if not he would have to go to court to get any legal custody. if you’re talking about money, the non custodial parent would pay.

I mean you can get child support even if you were never married. I had a kid at 19 out of wedlock. I’m only 24 and not really ready to get married yet but if I were to get married it would be because I wanted to get married, not because of wanting better protection in the event that my SO ever leaves me
