IUD placed 8w pp experience

K

I just got the Mirena placed yesterday at about 8 weeks post partum and oh my gosh it was such a better experience than my first with an IUD.

My first (and only other) IUD was the Paragard which I had placed 4 years ago. The procedure took 45 minutes because they couldn’t get my cervix to dilate and it was excruciating. I had taken ibuprofen before it like they said to do and it did absolutely nothing for the pain. The pain didn’t subside at all for many hours (I could barely walk and could not bend at the waist) and I had to take the max dose of ibuprofen daily for weeks to keep my pain at just a manageable level. I think my body was trying to reject it but couldn’t. I was in pain for 3 months. I ended up removing it after maybe 2 years and took pills instead.

Yesterday I was so scared to get an IUD again because of the first experience! Also because of the fact that I realized I forgot to take ibuprofen in preparation. But it was the complete opposite of the first. The most painful part of it was honestly the speculum. I experienced a stinging pain with that because of the tears I had experienced from birth causing sensitivity there for me. I didn’t feel the clamp inside, didn’t feel her measuring me, and didn’t feel the IUD being put in. A few hours later I started having some mild cramping and am experiencing it some today too along with spotting, but the pain is only like a 3/10. I was so shocked at how fine I was after the procedure! The first one I was delirious from pain at one point and after the second, I was shopping for groceries like nothing even happened!
