Invited to “the end” of the wedding??!

We’ve been invited to a wedding reception “after” dinner around 8pm. It’s one of my husband’s colleagues. It will be just 8 of us going to the “party” I’ve never in my life have heard of such a weird invitation, so I told my husband, he should go and I’ll stay home with the kids. He doesn’t want to go alone and said the other guys are taking their wives/gfs too. It’s tomorrow, but the more I think of this situation and how “second class” this feels like the more I’m inclined not to attend. What do I do?

I’ve heard of this before, don’t over think it. It’s a colleague not a best friend. They wanted to invite people to celebrate with them but didn’t want to break the bank on dinner. Unless you have a problem finding a sitter, I’d say go and support. I’m invited to a wedding reception this summer for a ceremony and dinner that happened a few weeks ago. It’s a little weird and out of the norm, but it’s not a huge deal.

It's common to be invited to the dance but not the dinner. Just think of it as getting to dance have a few drinks and let lose. I think you are over thinking it. Go have fun. It's the fun part about weddings you just get to miss the serious intimate moments. Have a good time.

It would be a weird invite if a close friend or family but this is just a colleague. Out of the box but why not!

This is normal, every wedding I have been too has the main ceremony guests (all day and night) and then the reception guests (evening only) which starts after dinner, the reception guests are normally made up of work colleagues, friends of the parents & acquaintances, I’ve also been to 2 weddings where the partners of the bride and groom party were only invited to the reception, just go! Have a night away from the kids! In my experience the reception is where all the fun starts! X

It’s very common to only be invited to the reception and not the ceremony. Sometimes the ceremony venue can only hold a small amount of people compared to the reception. Or some couples only want their family and close friends at the ceremony but want to celebrate with everyone at the reception. Or maybe they just want to do a small dinner with work colleagues and other friends that couldn’t make it to the main event. It’s not “second-class” at all. Regardless, you should go to support your husband. He wants to go to be respectful but doesn’t want to be alone, so you should be there with him.
