They’ve been married for 20 years, and say when they give me relationship advice I should take it bc they have experience. I don’t want my marriage to be ANYTHING like theirs.

Depends. Just because someone might be in a shitty relationship or one you don’t want to model yours after, doesn’t mean they can’t give good advice. Sometimes it’s easier to give good advice than take it. I was in an abusive relationship before while I was telling others to leave and to get help. I wasn’t ready to do that for myself yet. I knew I had to, but didn’t know how. But that doesn’t mean the advice I gave should have been ignored or not taken. Also, they might be telling you ways how to not be like them because they also don’t like it, but they know AFTER THE FACT how they got there and what they would do differently. You can give good advice without being in a good spot yourself.
