When to buy a breast pump?

I will check to see if insurance covers it, but I'm not sure if mine does in Canada. Anyway, assuming it's not covered...when do you invest in a breast pump? Should I buy it before baby arrives or wait and see if breastfeeding is going to be something that works for us? Should I just get a small handheld one ahead of time and buy a good electric once we see how it goes? 🤔

You will want to buy it before the baby is here. It's best to take it to the hospital with you so that a lactation consultant can go over how to use it and clean it. Also, my coworker said she started pumping right away after her daughter would eat because she didn't with her son and she wasn't able to store up extra. Your body will only make as much as it thinks you need so making it think it needs a lot more early on will help you get a good stock of extra to freeze.

I got a double electric pump through my insurance but since I ordered it after the baby was born I went out and bought a manual pump just incase. Last week I lost all the part to my electric pump(accidentally threw them out) but I still needed to pump at work so I brought the manual one. It was great so much easier to use and carry with me. I'll still use the electric at home but the manual is perfect for work!! Plus it only cost $40!!
