Getting dumped via text

My boyfriend , or should I call him my ex boyfriend texted me today that ‘this is not working ‘ . Then last night, I had told him that I want to pick up some things from his place since I’m going to wear them for Christmas and he was like ‘ while you are there , please pick your other items too ‘ . For the past few weeks , he just slowly started reducing communication and I also noticed that if I don’t make any effort , we will stay in silence.

I’m happy for his honesty , but God , why did he have to do it over text and how can things just move from zero to 100 over such a short time . Anyway , I’m now wondering how to respond to him . Should I just pour my heart out or should I just accept the fate of things , tell him I respect his decision, wish him a merry Christmas and move on like an adult ?
