Would you tell your daughter that you hate her tattoo?

My daughter got a tattoo she's been wanting for a while. It's Lucifer and Lilth and that's not even why I dislike the tattoo. That artist fucked that tattoo up. And all I can say is if I paid 650 for what she got I would cry and run around naked. But is it appropriate to tell someone you think the tattoo looks bad? It's permanently on her body so it isn't like she can erase it. My husband also thinks the tattoo looks bad. What is tattoo etiquette?

I wouldn’t bring it up unless she brought it up. You don’t need to go making her feel bad about it if she likes it. But if she brings up herself I’d suggest helping her find someone to fix it.

So as someone with a shitty tattoo, I’m gonna give you my story and try to keep it as short as possible. So bear with me. 
I booked an appointment at a parlor that did my first tattoo and unfortunately because I was young, and SO determined to get this damn tattoo, and I was alone — I ignored allllll the red flags. 
First and foremost, apprentice was doing the tattoo, wasn’t a big fan of that but ofc I didn’t say anything.  Day of the appointment, he’s 4 hours late and like a total idiot instead of rescheduling, I waited for him to get there. Then it took him FOREVER to get his shit together and he struggled with blowing my tattoo up to size.
But eventually he gets the stencil on me and of course everything looks great when it’s just an outline so I was quick to say yep, good to go, let’s finally do this. Took a few hours but he got the outline done and at first I LOVED it. So as one does, I took a pic of it and posted it to Facebook and most people "liked" it and had nothing but nice things to say about it, all except one person, who felt compelled to tell me it looked like shit. And then panic set in because I started to really analyze the photo and realized, while I thought he was a dick for saying that, he wasn’t necessarily wrong. 
When the artist blew up the stencil, he never corrected the proportions so the design was distorted in places. For example, the genie’s neck is elongated and her shoulders and arms curve in an unnatural way. ALSO one of the extra elements I asked for was a genie lamp, however the lamp looks more like a teapot. And lastly, and probably the biggest reason I hate the tattoo is because I specifically said I did NOT want it to look cartoonish, but it does, and also she looks demonic 😂 at the time big Kardashian lips was not trendy, yet my genie has massive lips and a few people have even said it looks like she has a mustache. And her eyes are really creepy. He basically drew circles with like winged eyeliner but no eyebrows and no lashes…
Soooo in an attempt to fix it, I specifically asked for the actual tattoo artist and he added hair over her shoulders to kind of conceal the distortion of her neck and arms and he added a crystal ball in her hands because her hands were jacked up but you can’t even tell it’s a crystal ball, and he started to add some color to the smoke because before filling it in, it actually looked like a big cloud, and just nothing about the tattoo made sense the way the apprentice designed it out and tattooed it. And after those two sessions I never went back and it’s been 14 years. I keep it covered as much as humanly possible. And I keep telling myself eventually I’ll find an artist that may be able to fix it in some way. But even after the "corrections" it’s still a shit tattoo. 
It didn’t stop me from continuing to get tattoos. But it did mak me WAY more selective and more vocal about what I want. When getting tattoos I feel like you do have to be understanding and almost anticipate that there’s going to be minor flaws but they should be SO minor that only YOU (the person it’s tattooed on) may notice. If at first glance someone else is able to pick out mistakes, that’s a bad tattoo. And it might be helpful to tell her. I mean I feel like eventually I would have realized on my own that my tattoo was done poorly without people telling me and making me hella self conscious about it. But maybe I would have continued to get more shitty tattoos. 
I guess it also really depends on why and how you tell her. Like that kid that commented on my picture and just said “it looks like shit” — he did that just to be mean, he wasn’t someone I even knew in person, let alone was friends with and he didn’t tell me in a way that was constructive. So the last thing you want to do is make her self conscious and feel like she’s stuck with a trash tattoo on her body for the rest of her life cus while they can MAYBE be fixed/covered/removed, it takes time and money and trusting someone to not make it worse and it can be a painful process, physically and mentally.

It’s really inappropriate to tell someone that their tattoo looks bad. Just be supportive and not “I told you so” when she needs to get it fixed because that sucks bad enough. One of mine was messed up by the artist (I was young and didn’t know any better), so I know it’s unreadable, but it’s not going to help anything for others to point that out further.
