Effaced?

Question

This may be a silly question but what does effaced mean? I see women talk about dilation as well as being a percentage amount effaced.

this may be gross to some people and you may never think about a lifesaver candy the same way again.... but..... this helped me understand it.  put a lifesaver candy in your mouth and let it dissolve slowly. dont bite it! dont chew it!! just keep letting it dissolve on your tongue.  the lifesaver will start to get really thin (thats what happens when a cervix is effacing/effacement).  And the hole in the center of the lifesaver will start to get bigger and bigger (thats what happens during cervix dilation.)   Does that help everyone visualize this?  it helped me! (Learned this awesome analogy from my birthing class.)

It's the amount of flexibility your cervix has. As labor draws near you start to become effaced. Where your cervix will begin to be stretchy and start to dialate (open).
