Should I lie about my due date?

My family is crazy. Crazy parents crazy parent in laws, the works. Is it selfish of me to want to lie about my due date by a few weeks so my husband and I can enjoy our special moment before everyone bombards us and eventually gets into fights? We live in another state but it's driving distance so they could potentially be here in mere hours if they wanted. I just wanted a few hours without everyone to cherish the moment would be nice.

Every midwife in Europe tells the same: DON't announce your exacte due date!!!! Because you will bombarded  with nasty telephone calls and visits.... Best is: tell them about 3 weeks later than your real due date is.... And don't tell them a day - just say (f.e.) end of May - or middle of June or beginning of July.... But always 3 (!!!) weeks later than it is. I wouldn't call it 'lying' - it's always a probability that your baby is born within the time frame +/- 3 weeks around your due date... You are right - the first hours after birth are REALY special hours - don't let you stress out from your relatives.... Some of them will call anyway 4 weeks daily and ask: 'is the baby born'.... I've done this with my 2 children - and nobody was angry with me... They were just happy that mother and child were feeling well!!!

I empathize with your situation and understand wanting private time with your SO and baby before sharing.  However, I think lying will only end up backfiring and will do more harm than good if you happen to get busted.  If I were you, I would explain to them that you want a few days to get settled in after the baby is born before accepting visitors.  They may get upset at first, but remember that this is your decision.  If they are pushing the issue, you really don't have to tell them as soon as the baby is born.  Remember, though, that as crazy as they are, this baby's arrival is exciting to them as well.  Good luck!

I think it's your baby and your birth and if they weren't quite as crazy you would want them to be there I have people in my family like that and I'm not even going to have them in the labor or delievery room for this baby just because I don't need their stress or their advice

I think they would find our later when the baby was born and it would cause more drama about the lie.  I personally think it would be best to tell them the due date.  It doesn't mean that's when tyre baby will actually come.  When the baby comes,  you can give yourself a few days or whatever amount of time before you announce it.  Iknow other people who've done that and just said they were busy with the baby and wanted to settle in before telling people.

I wish I could do that and have some alone time with my family. My mom was here for the birth of my first and things didn't go well. But we have no family in state and therefore no one to watch my toddler when I go into labor. And the only friend I'd trust is due three weeks before me so not going to do that to her. So need a family member here so we have help.

It's completely your decision. Babys can be born either side of due date. They need to respect your space though those first couple weeks are precious bonding time. Good luck x

I just told them May, I don't even know my actual due date lol it says may 17 but it might be later or earlier. So. No one will know besides my husbands boss.

I agree with the idea of telling them a time. Like beginning or end of the month. if you decide to tell them anything, this might be a little easier than giving them an exact date but also like other women are saying it is your pregnancy and so your health and happiness and that of the baby's and your significant other is more important.

​ I would not want stress to ruin such an important and exciting time either. Though I wouldn't flat out lie because as others have mentioned that may make things difficult for you in the future if they find out.
