Therapy costs?

How can anyone afford therapy? My husband is pretty successful and even we can't afford it. I'm pretty sure our insurance doesn't cover it. We need family therapy and some couples (sex) therapy. I just don't see how we could ever afford it though. We're already spending tons of money on different therapies for our autistic son and there's no room left in the budget after that.

You have some options. A) Go through insurance and find a therapist; B) Go to a self-pay therapist and ask whether they do a super bill (bill you submit to your insurance to get possible reimbursement ); C) find a sliding scale therapist; D) Find a pre-licensed therapist who is under supervision of a therapist. They're working towards licensure but are less expensive (full disclosure: I fall into this category). Therapy can be expensive but also consider the cost of your well-being by not going.

Our insurance covers individual therapy but not couples therapy. I looked into it a couple years ago. Maybe do individual therapy if it's covered (both of you) and then once a month pay out of pocket for couples therapy?

Look into options where they have a sliding scale. I've been in counseling since the summer. My insurance covered 80%, but since the new year I don't have that insurance anymore. However, I only go every 3 weeks now (yay success and progress!) so it cuts down on the cost. And the clinic I go to offers a discounted rate for people without insurance. Also, if you really need counseling, I'm sure there are things in your budget you could change up to be able to pay - quit fast food, Starbucks, Netflix, turn the heat down a few degrees, etc. maybe make a budget and see where you could reallocate some money.

Do you attend church? My pastor does any and all therapy with our congregation for free. Sure it might be awkward but we love doing our premarital counseling and it being a biblical foundation. I would have no issues going back for therapy if needed.

Your insurance may cover some number of sessions- it won't be all that you need but it is a good start. You can also go to a local church and ask if they offer counseling, they may not be trained as well as a therapist but they are usually free or low cost. A third option is to go to a clinic where therapy students are doing their hours. They have completed their schooling but just need a certain number of client contact hours to get their license. There it's also usually free or really reduced pricing. It's like getting your hair cut at a hair school. Hope that helps and that you can get the therapy you need ☺️

I agree with you about it being expensive. In my city, couples counseling costs $80 per session, and that's WITH insurance.
