I have been told you aren't supposed to add anything to a car seat that doesn't come with the seat such as any type of inserts because it can create space and make any injury during a car accident much worse.

That is not safe. Roll up receiving blankets and place next to baby on both sides. Or contact the seat manufacturer and ask if they have an approved insert.

Adding after market products to your car seat not only potentionally affects the safety of the seat it 100% voids your warranty. Best to just use 2 rolled receiving blankets on either side of baby, you Don't want anything that goes between car seat and baby besides the clothes they are wearing.

There is nothing wrong with that. If a car seat doesn't come with one (and sometimes they come with a cheap sucky  one) you def need one. I had one almost identical to that with my last baby. Mom of three soon to be four.

Despite what people are saying, that's fine! As long as its not super thick and you still strap baby in nice and tight. I have a pink one in the car seat we have, but that's because the car seat is used and its gender neutral. We are hoping to get a different car seat for our baby shower with an insert already in it.

I'll tell you this though, your baby having a comfortable car seat is HUGE when it comes to how fussy they are during car rides. Babies do get uncomfortable too, and I couldn't imagine sitting on uncomfortable hard car seat without anything soft under my head. If these weren't safe, Walmart, Target, Buy Buy Baby etc would not be selling car seat inserts. Usually you can find ones that have a list of car seat brands they work with.
