Bleeding & cramps

I'm 5w1d and having a lot of spotting - red blood which I hear is bad. This is my first pregnancy and I'm freaking out. I'm so scared I'm going to miscarry. I had mildly bad cramps yesterday evening and night but those are much lighter today. But I'm still having quite a bit of blood (not a heavy flow and no clots) showing up. Any advice out there? I'm trying to avoid the doctor if there's no reason to go.
