Will you let your children drink alkohol ?

Question

To be honest, I drank alcohol before I was 21 (and I'm still under 21) and I dont really want to forbid anything what I've done myself. 
As a mother I feel a looooot more protective tho and I dont want my children to do anything bad, wanna keep them as far away from trouble as I can of course but if they should drink alcohol, I want them to tell me and not keep it as a secret and do it behind my back. I wouldnt really let them do it like that anyway but I'd still want to know what they do.

Would you let your children drink or is it like a no-go for you?

I believe you can have an open dialog with your children about alcohol, drugs, sex...without them needing you to allow them to do it.  But that's just my opinion.

I think my parents started letting me have a small glass of wine at holidays and special occasions when I was around 15. I don't know if that contributed to the fact I was usually the DD for my friends and never got drunk at parties, if anything I would have one drink. I think teaching them responsible drinking is appropriate. My friends who were raised in strict households or dry households ended up being the binge drinkers or druggie kids.

My parents would allow me to have a wine cooler when laying by the pool when I was under 21 maybe around 17-18?  I never felt the need to hide it and always felt responsible with alcohol because there was such an open dialogue about it. I think as a parent if you act like it is the worst thing ever then it will only make them more curious to try it and may not know how to be responsible. Everyone parents differently though & im in no way saying this is right or wrong, just how I was raised.

My parents were very strict with me not drinking, yet they drank in front of me ALL THE TIME. I think that was part of the reason I grew up to abuse alcohol (I was sent to live in a rehab facility for a month at 15) and then at 16 was in a drunk driving crash, shortly before finding out I was pregnant. That's why my firstborn (22 weeks) is going to have a deadbeat dad, because he was my first love, and when I was that drunk and had just ran into him I'd do anything to be close to him again. My baby girl will know her limits and know that I don't allow her to drink at big parties where rape happens so often, and she'll know I don't allow tuquila or straight vodka. I'll allow her to try it at home but only to learn how much she can handle, and that she can't drive, not even with one beer. I'll pick her up if she's ever in a terrible position where she can't get home.

I wasn't allowed to drink, so I did get a little wild after I grew up, but it didn't last long. My younger sister on the other hand, was allowed to occasionally while she was under age, well... she's out on her own now and still not quite 21 and she's drunk every weekend, at different friends houses and she drinks quite a bit thru out the week and ends up drunk and in bed pretty early... so, it could go either way. With my children, I plan to lead by example. To each their own but no underage drinking under my roof.

my mom didn't "let" both my sister and I drink alcohol, and both of us still did. Teenagers will find a way to do what they want if they want to do it. I will tell my children that they should not drink before 21 and all of the consequences that may come along with it BUT if for some reason they still go ahead and do it anyway, TO CALL ME if they need help, a ride home, etc. Id much rather have my child have a safe option than to get in the car with a drunk driver, go somewhere that's not safe or something because they're afraid of getting in trouble.

Well in my house no one really drinks I don't think you need a drink to have fun with your family it really depends on how you are raised and how you wanna raise your kids I never drank anything in front of my mom or dad I did it yes when I was 19 and did it almost just when it was events and always would think to have a limit because I had that respect for my parents I didn't want them to know I'm sure maybe they were not going to mind but still I was always like that.. I am 25 years old 4 years sober no drinking no nothing with 2 kids and responsabilities and goals in life taking care of my kids it's more important than being drinking there's other ways to relieve stress other than drink I just don't like to be depending on something for me to be able to feel good and that's how I wanna raise my kids now they still can do it if they want but at least I will have my responsibility of teaching them once they are big enough they will have to learn how to do things they will know when it's bad and not and also they will have to learn how to deal with consequences....

Well im from uk where the legal drinking age is 18 and my parents let me have a drink at 16 on special ocassions like xmas. Im not a heavy drinker. I cant even imagine waiting until 21 to legally drink sounds a bit odd to me but then again maybe thats just because things are done differently here
