If sperm is present soon as the egg is released does it fertilize right then ?

It will attempt to fertilise yes. That's how people get pregnant when they have sex not during their fertile period, as the sperm can live inside you for up to 5 days.

Fertilization happen over the span of minimum 16 hours until 2 nuclea appear and two polar bodies. On IV ICSI they count day of fertilization day zero and day 1 is when earliest they can check for normal fertilization as eggs might not be fertilized at all by sperm or can fertilize abnormal by having just one nucleus of genetic material. Neither is viable. Technically fertilization starts as soon as sperm goes inside through the shell but the complete process takes from 16 to 18 hours. Then cells divide fast. First division result in 2 cells next in 4 after that 8 then 16 after there is morulla which compacts and creates embryo. Embryo hatches day 5 or day 6 and goes on to try to implant fully.
