Meet the kid?

Question

I was wondering, how long were you with someone before you introduced them to your kids? 
To be even more specific, a 5-6 year old daughter.
I've been with my guy over four years and i still have not met his kid. I mean, i have heard of being over protective but i dont want to be in a relationship thats not going anywhere.
So my question is, how long should you wait before introducing your kid to your partner?

I was with a guy that didn't introduce me to his kid that was around the same age and he ended up to still be with the mother. A year and a half is a long time. Either he's up to something or he's not serious about you.

A year and a half is way too long. If you haven't met his child after that long, he might still be with the mom or trying to and doesn't want the child talking about any other women in his life. Do you spend time with his family? Parents, siblings, etc?

I was with a man for about 4 months before I met his 3 year old. The first time I met him he had fallen asleep with my new sew blanket in my lap. His mom was not a good mom. So he grew very attached very quick. When his father and I split he still came to see me every once in a while to make the transition easier for him. We only split because his mother threatened to take him away. And i wasnt going to be the reason a boy lost his dad. You just need to give him time to decide when he thinks best you meet his child. His child could be one who gets attached easily. Or he could be respecting the wishes of the child's mother. There are so many factors in this that we won't ever understand

My daughter(9) just met my boyfriend of a year last week. She knows him as my friend, not my boyfriend. If we get into a place where we are going to move in together, then she will know him as my boyfriend. At the end of the day it's not about you. You are the adult and have the ability to understand the complexities of relationships. She's a child and may still be struggling with why her parents aren't together. I chose to not introduce my BF and my child until I was sure he was going to be around for a long time. Kids form attachment s to people and can have a difficult time processing why that person isn't around anymore. He might be more receptive to the idea if he doesn't feel pressured to make the meet and greet happen.

In my opinion within the first 6 months. Anytime after that it's because he's hiding something or the mother is making threats if he has a girlfriend she won't let the dad see the child.

Right away not something you hde. And explain to the guy that if your not in for the long haul don't let my kid get attached.  Introduced her to a lot of guys I date. Only 1 does she really remember and he strung us along. I didn't let her get to know her step dad till we were exclusive for about a month, but he put a promise ring on finger at the same time.

I'm in a very similar situation.
The thing about dating men with children is that it's not going to always be about you. It depends on custody agreements and his relationship with the mother but there are a lot of people involved that are affected by your relationship besides the two of you. It's okay to take things slowly. If you want to meet his kid that is something to talk about with him. I agree that a year is long enough to start doing things like that but please don't beat yourself up or assume the worst just because it hasn't happened yet.

I didn't meet my step kids for probably 2 years. I knew they existed but husband wanted to make sure I was going to be around for the long haul. Not a fan of being a bunch of people in their lives just for them to get attached and then have them leave like their bio-mom does. She's brought 5 guys around in 4 yrs. this last one she brought to her 5 yr olds birthday when the kids just met him the day before. In all honesty it's not about you. My stepson was 6 when we first met. His father and I were together for maybe 6 months. A little more possibly. I wasn't in any hurry to meet his son. Kids were always a deal breaker to me before I met my SO.

When I did finally meet his kid it was a very casual encoumter. I met up with them at a baseball game. I drove myself, and left afterwards. Getting to know him was a very slow process. A lunch here and there or round of mini golf. I think it was about a year into our relationship before I ever slept over with his son there and that was because it was new years eve.

I find it best to take it super slow. Don't force a relationship with the kid.
