Is Getting a Doppler a Good or Bad Idea?

Question

My hubby thinks having a Doppler will make me obsessive. I think it would just bring me comfort. Would you all recommend it or not based on your own experiences? If so, what brand?

I personally wouldn't get a Doppler.

The second you can't find a heartbeat, you'll freak and assume something is wrong. They can cause a ton of worry, which is extra unnecessary stress on you (and the baby).

I love mine! You just have to be aware, especially until you find out how your baby lies, that it's common to not be able to find it sometimes. And know to not stress about it. I know exacly where to find my boys heartbeat so it's really easy for me now. After a miscarriage, it was veryyyyy reassuring for me the first trimester, worth every penny. Now I'll still listen to it about once a week. I'll probably stop when I can feel him move consistently, but I still rarely feel even flutters at 19 weeks because of my anterior placenta.

I bought a sonoline B when I was 12 weeks. I only used it about 3 times a week to enjoy hearing the heartbeat, for me it wasn't hard to find but I was farther along and asked my doc to show me how to use it best. Now that I'm 21 weeks and feeling the baby move I barely use it.

As long as you realize that the earlier you are, the less likely you are to find the heartbeat, and can manage to not freak out about it, I think it's a wonderful tool to have. Mine has made the whole family feel more connected to the baby! I use it once or twice a week.

Bad idea. There are times depending on where the placenta is and where the baby is you may not find it. I didn't purchase one for that reason.

I agree it could make things more complicated than they need to be, and then you are relying on a machine to tell you if your baby is okay. That sounds like more stress than we need as pregnant mamas. Try to trust your body and your baby during this time. You will know if something isn't right. Otherwise, enjoy this time to bond with baby without all the technology. Best wishes!

My OB advised me not to get one. I think I would get obsessive and probably panic if I couldnt find heart beat.

It was wonderful for me in the beginning. I got one around 12 weeks and was able to find the heartbeat after some searching. Now I don't really use it since she is a very active little girl and I feel her multiple times a day.

I personally think it's a bad idea. I haven't got one because I feel like I'll freak myself out and worry if I can't find the heartbeat. I'd rather just have the doctor do it every month at my appointment. I have 2 more appointments until I go weekly too.

I have one. As long as you are only using it on a leisurely, fun basis then I think it's fine. It's the people that have reduced movements for example and use there Doppler for reassurance that the baby has a heart beat when they should contact their midwife instead.
