Should He wait?

I pierced my boyfriends ear lastnight with a 14g needle and put a 14g taper in. His other ear is already a 4 and he wants to even them out. He told me today that he wants me to put the 12g taper in because his ear doesn't hurt at all. My ears are gauged to 9/16 and I don't follow regular guaging protocol I just go to the next size when I feel like it aslong as they don't hurt. Should I have him wait? Or should I put the 12g taper in today?
