Reveal party?

Does the sex reveal party substitutes baby showers? My cousing had a regular baby shower and for the second one she had  the reveal party. How does it work? It seems trending.

Since some people consider it bad etiquette to have a shower for subsequent kids, many people are having a smaller celebration, usually without gifts unless someone feels like surprising them, called a reveal party. I think they have cake and some sort of fun way to announce if the baby is a boy or girl (sometimes even using the color of the cake interior to announce). However, some find it perfectly acceptable to have a shower for someone's 2nd+ kid, in which case you probably wouldn't have a shower and a gender reveal party. I feel like unless it's your first kid, you should choose one or the other.

My husband and I are hosting a gender reveal party, and my MIL is going to be hosting the baby shower. The gender reveal is just for maybe 2 friends and immediate family and no presents are expected, and the baby shower will the the traditional present party with lots of people.

We are having the reveal party/baby shower in one. We are requesting gift cards instead of gifts or they can choose to send a gift later on if they'd like. All we really want is for our loved ones to join in the celebration of our little one in a special way. If you can afford to do the two separate parties then go for it. We prefer to save what we can, while we can.

I'll be having both, but this is my first baby. If it were my second I'd probably just have the gender reveal (unless it was the opposite sex as the first, in which case I think it's more acceptable to have another shower or even better a "sprinkle"). However, I have given people explicit instructions not to give us ANY gifts at our reveal in 2 weeks. I just made it known it was a casual get together for family/close friends if they were interested in finding out the sex with us.

A person I know had a baby shower for their first - people gave gifts for baby. Then a gender reveal for their second and told people it was just an afternoon tea with friends and not to bring gifts.
