Menstrual cups are absolutely amazing if you're comfortable with your body and don't mind a little blood. Also look up menstrual cup and moon cup for more info.
I use the moon cup and it's this little silicone cup that you fold up and insert into your vagina, which immediately unfolds and creates an air-tight seal which prevents blood from leaking out (though I still get leaks and use cotton panty liners for added protection). You empty it every two hours or so, depending on your flow. It's a little pricey but it's natural, skin safe silicone and it's washable so you don't have to keep buying a new one like you do with tampons or pads. Most women use theirs for about six months before replacement but can last longer if taken care of really well.
I also recommend gladrags.com which sells menstrual cups but also washable pads, which are great back up in case your moon cup does leak, especially good for when you first wake up and all the blood goes rushing downward.
Moon cups and reuse able cotton pads are less likely to allow for the growth of bacteria and are safer than tampons or pads. As well, since you buy them a lot less frequently they're economical and will save you money.
