Crib bumpers...why?!

Question

So...I'm getting a breathable mesh bumper/liner as I constantly see and hear why the regular bumpers are not good to have and even illegal in some places! So why are they pretty much in EVERY picture online....they come with every bedding set....they are in every store?! 
Am I missing something?! 
Grant it they make the crib and decor look better....but why even have them around so much if they are so bad? 
The only ones I've seen for the breathable ones are the mesh kind....is there another kind out there? 
Do you even need one?! And is there any point where the regular bumpers are safe to use as baby gets older? 
We are going bedding shopping this week! Lol

I've never used them. I don't even get a crib bedding set. I just get some fitted sheets and a few blankets that match for when he gets older. Nonsense spending $300 on something u can't even use half of.

They are still sold with sets because older babies can use them just fine. It's the infants (under 6 months) who are at risk

I think people use the mesh ones so the baby doesn't get limbs stuck or injured in between the rungs of the crib.

Baby won't be able to start rolling over or anything until about 3 months do extensive research SIDS can be caused by many other factors including genetics!

I didn't see them in the store much when I went shopping for my son last year. We got the mesh bumpers and used the sheets and just draped the big blanket that came in his bedding set over the glider for decor. I was glad I did mesh though because by 2 months he was squirming all over the crib in his sleep and always ended up by the sides/corners. We never swaddled him because he hated it, and he was a tummy sleeper by 5 weeks   Now he's almost 11 months old, and the only way he sleeps comfortably is if there's something he can snuggle up to. I thought about getting the fluffy bumpers but it's not worth the cost. I keep a couple small blankets and a little stuffed animal in there now and even though it's still a big no no at this age, a pillow.

Im my baby class they dont recommend to have one of those in the crib. Its just marketing to make you buy stuff that aren't necessary and actually can cause sudden death and that's scary!!!

I've used the regular ones before and all my son did was push them down and this time I'm not using any even tho I still have the same ones as before. I don't really see a point and I'm on my third baby

They are safe to use when baby is older. Tons of people still use them even though they are known for contributing to SIDS. We got a bedding set (Winnie the pooh!) and though I think the bumpers are adorable, I won't be putting them on until baby is at least one and I know she can move away from them on her own

Some states have banned their sale which is awesome but it's a state by state thing.  I think they look pretty but I also love the look of rail guards that some manufacturers are making now to replace bumpers (to prevent kids from chewing on the rails) and those are a lot safer.

I have an old pregnancy book (one my mom got when she was pregnant with me!) that I was looking through and according to that, if you DO use bumpers, they're supposed to be taken down by the time they're 6 months old or they can be used to climb out of the crib, so new science says not to use before 6 months, old science says not to use after 6 months, no point in getting them at all to me!

The same reason cigarettes are sold. It's all about money. You aren't supposed to use any after market car seat accessories either. They are extremely dangerous and void any warranty on your car seat. Yet the little owl strap covers and car seat swaddle blankets ect are sold everywhere. Things that can potentially harm little ones should be regulated more strictly but unfortunately money matters more apparently.
