When can i stop waking baby to breastfeed?

My son will be 6 weeks on wednesday & is exclusively breastfed. In the first weeks i remember the hospital & the docter telling me to wake him every 2-3 hours to breastfeed. He has been gaining weight very well & having plenty of poops & pee's .
My question is as what age do you stop waking them every 2-3 hours to feed? 
Like i said he is almost 6 weeks, we still usually wake him every 2-3 hours during the day, but for the 1st time last  night he slept 5 hours inbetween a feeding & i felt so guilty. People say they will wake to feed when they need it.. But will he stop gaining his weight well if i stop waking him every 2-3 hours? & just let him feed on demand ?

I've only heard to wake them up the first few days while they're still surviving of colostrum. To help your milk come in and to make sure they aren't dehydrated. I have never heard of doing it for so long though. I didn't with my first and I'm not with my second.

I was told to stop once he reached his birth weight again. Though I don't think I was ever successfully able to wake him up so I just let him sleep. By a month he had gained 2.5lbs and no one was worried about it.

My pediatrician said I could let my baby sleep up to 6 hours at night at two weeks old. Only thing is with breastfeeding I can't go that long so I wake up and pump. Now she is 10 weeks gained more than enough weight I let her sleep from 9:30 to 3:00.

I would stop now. I don't wake my son to eat at night and he is gaining weigh just fine! (And he is 3 weeks). My daughter started sleeping through the night at 6-7 weeks and never had difficulty with weight gain.
