My boyfriend and I went out to dinner a while ago and he ordered a beer to go with. The waitress asked to see his ID of course (we're in our early 20's) and she noticed while looking at it that he's an organ donar. She then asked me if I was and I told her I wasn't and she told us this story about how if we were to get into an accident, like a serious one, that the paramedics would try harder to save me because I'm not an organ donar and they wouldn't try as hard to save my boyfriend because he is an organ donar and if he weren't to make it yet would be allowed to take his organs. (Of course they'd still try to save him but she just meant they would try harder for me because I'm not a donar and they can't have my organs.) is that true?

Lol. They'd have to search for his wallet and pull out his ID then look for the little heart. They go straight to life saving measures when they get on the scene. They don't care if you're a donor or not. They have to test and inspect your organs before they even know if they are healthy enough to be donated anyway.

My dad is a fire fighter and has been for 20+ years. I can 100% say with empirical evidence that this is wholly untrue. Paramedics and EMT's will do their absolute best to save you regardless of organ donor status :)

If you're really on the verge of dying chances are I'm trying to save your life before I go searching for your ID and I'm not gonna stop because someone mentions you're a organ donor and the other person isn't.

This is untrue (even though it's a common thought), and really weird of your waitress to say... Why was she studying the ID so hard?? All she needed to see was the date of birth. Weird, awkward, and inappropriate.

Lol of course it's not true. I hate that people spread that crap around. Paramedics, doctors, nurses don't care one bit if you're an organ donor. 99% of them wouldn't even know if you are.

That isn't true, if an organ donor is at risk of dying, they try everything to save that person.

This is absolutely not true. Paramedics do not have time to look for documentation to determine who is an organ donor and who is not before starting life saving treatment. Their priority is to preserve life, they don't even look for ID or for contact information that is the job of the police on scene of the accident.
