Hours and wages

Catherine
This is my first time posting to CC, so I hope I'm following all the rules (which I did read).
My husband and I recently found out that he isn't getting paid for the time he's actually working. For example: he's supposed to have two 15 min paid breaks and a 30 min unpaid lunch. He clocks in and out for every break and lunch. If he clocks in even two minutes late from a break they then turn his 15 min paid break into a 30 min unpaid lunch. So, he's no longer getting paid for his break and not getting paid for the 13 mins he was actually working. All because of clocking in 2 mins late. There was one day that he clocked in 1 min late for each break, because the door into the building is locked and he had to wait for someone to come and open it. They marked him down for 3 unpaid lunches in one day.
We already know this is very illegal and have spoken to a lawyer. We could probably hope to recoup about $2000. To make it debatable my question is:
Is it worth pursuing legal action and filing a claim with the state  knowing that it's not that much money and the loss of the job is highly likely, but knowing that if you do nothing it will continue to happen?
Is doing what you know is right worth any consequences that may come from it?
