What do you think about people using the word "retarded" when saying something is stupid?

I was looking at CC posts earlier and was looking through the comment section and I saw a woman use retarded when she was saying something was stupid. What do you think about this? My mother uses the word retarded and I usually have to correct her sometimes because I don't think that's appropriate to use instead of stupid.
