4 week old still using nipple shield

We are 4 weeks into using nipple shields. I don't have flat nipples but they are on the smaller side. Shield helps draw them out and shape them.... Without it I feel my nipples are "soft". Babies is really upset and won't latch without the shield. Any tips? I'd like to stop using the shield if I can.
