Pregnancy

I have a question. I thought I stared my period and I ended three days early and it was light. I didn't think anything about it. When me and my boyfriend did sexual stuff I had brown discharge and then I bled a little bit. Thinking I was pregnant I toke a test but it came back negative. Could I have taken the test to early or could it be somthing else? Help plz!!
