Fake bake self tanner

So question. I used the fake bake self tanner and love it, but I'm having some problems. The color is great I spray it onto the mit and have watched plenty of tutorials on how to apply it the correct way. No matter what the bottom half of my legs end up with super dark spots where my pores or hair follicles will be. How do I stop the tanner from getting into those pores and making dots all over? I also am expo listing before in the shower and shaving. I have tried taking a cold shower to close the pores and I have tried waiting an hour or so after the shower.
