does this remind you of racism / slavery?

my friend is pregnant with her second son, her boyfriend is half Native American half African-American, and she is a total white girl. 
she absolutely loves the name Tobias,somebody said it was in a movie and African American people were related to slavery. 
do you all think this is true? I have never heard of the connection.

Some people are just ignorant and trying to be funny. What this person is referring to is the movie Roots where a slave by the name of Kunta Kente (sp) was beaten repeatedly by his master for refusing to submit to his "new" name they had given to him. That name was Toby NOT Tobias. Either way your "friend" is an ass and the name is fine. Tell them to stop reaching. I'm 100% black and would not have an issue with the name Tobias, he'll I actually have a cousin with the name.

We actually considered using that name because it was in the divergent movies and we just absolutely loved it. My first thought when hearing it has nothing to do with racism or slavery.

The name reference is from a series called Roots which is an in depth story of one slave, Kunta Kinte, brought over from Africa. There is a very dramatic and intense scene where the slave trader is telling him his new name is Tobias and when Kunta Kinta refuses to acknowledge it he is whipped repeatedly. I was fortunate enough to be exposed to Roots in grade school and I think it should be required in all school systems as its a very important part of American history.

Reminds me Four of Divergente series, which actually is pretty handsome, kind and a good man. Tobias means also "God is good", in the Bible he and Raphael overcome a demon too.

Seriously though, it's not like Tobias is some super obscure uncommon name, so whatever associations people have with that name are likely very diverse, and therefore irrelevant.
