Do you consider yourself African American

Question

I am "black" and I do not consider myself African American. I was born in the USA. I don't speak their language, don't wear African clothes. I know nothing about Africa except that is where African people were taken from to be enslaved.

What do you consider yourself?

They also speak other languages....obviously that is what I am talking about 😒

Well African American typically refers to Americans who are descendants of black people brought here from Africa as slaves. So if that's you then you're African American. Really has nothing to do with the language that you speak but instead about ancestry. I don't consider myself African American because my family is from Haiti.

Nope. Im black, but I'm Dutch and I'm not American even though I live here. I just prefer black. My entire family on both sides, no matter where they are living identify as Dutch or Netherlanders.
I don't know why black ppl have to be identified as African American and not just American. My husband's from Pennsylvania. But his family tree goes back to England and France. He doesn't call himself French American or English American...just American.

I was born in Canada but I'm a US citizen. I live in China right now to study. My family is of Pakistani descent, living in the US. When I'm living in Canada/US I have to refer myself as "Pakistani-American" or "Pakistani-Canadian" because to some people I can't just be called "American/Canadian", they wanna know "where I'm really from". When being in China, I call myself American. And nobody has a problem.

You're right about not having to call yourself African American. Because for me, the only thing I have in common with my Pakistani heritage are my parents. I'm only a first generation Canadian/American. So technically I'm just Pakistani descent. As you are African descent.

You should be able to call yourself just black if you want to. I mean I also call myself brown. I don't mind telling people I'm Pakistani American, but to some people I will never be "just American".

Oh my god so many stupid people commenting..  If you're not black why the hell are you commenting ?? It doesn't apply to you for gods sake.  The reason why so many Black people consider themselves African American is because years ago Black people weren't considered or treated like Americans.. They were treated like property and objects. They helped fight in the wars,  and they practically built this country and it still wasn't enough to call them Americans. Jesse Jackson 🙄 .. Started that nonsense with calling black people African-American. Him wanting to feel accepted by the white people.   I myself would never want to be called an American. I was born and raised here in America... But My family is  very much mixed African, Chinese,  Dutch and 😒 Caucasian.  But I would gladly accept "Black" ✊🏾

I guess that's the difference between nationality and ethnicity. I'm Canadian in nationality but I'm not an Indigenous person, so I'm not Canadian in ethnicity. I'm Italian/Polish in ethnicity but I don't know either of those languages or much about those countries.
