Epidural

So I just got home from my childbirth class and I'm supper confused. The nurse/ teacher said they turn off the epidural pump when it's time to push, because otherwise you can't feel when to push and can't push the right way if at all... I've never heard this before and want to know of this is true and if anyone had this experience or something different... Thanks in advance!
