Save your life or save others' lives?

Question

Say you were in a situation where you could either save your life at the cost of other lives, or you could save others' at the cost of your own life- which would you choose?
I ask because of the man in the Air Force who recently died in a plane crash. He knew the plane was crashing, if he jumped out and parachuted down (thus saving his own life), the plane would have crashed into a neighborhood potentially killing many. But he stayed in the plane and made sure it crashed into the ground in a remote area, because of his choice, he lost his life. 
Obviously, he's a hero. But I think since he's in the military he's a hero no matter what he chose. He left behind a wife and two young children.
So be honest, what would you do? Save your life, or save others?

I voted "save others" because that's what I like to think I would do. But in the moment, I have no idea how I would react.
Death is scary enough as it is. To actively choose death even to spare others goes against everything your body knows.

If I was still single and not a mother than I would gladly give up my life for others. Now that I have a husband and a child I would want to live by any means necessary. I have to worry about my family too. And I'm sorry that is selfish but I wouldn't want to never see my family again. I also want to think everything happens for a reason...

I've been in a situation that tested me. Midnight on highway 95 headed home from a flight into McCarran airport in Vegas. A van was on fire on the side of the road. Slammed on the brakes, parked, got out and an elderly couple was running toward me. It was a total blur, like I went on auto pilot, but I guess I asked them if anyone was in there and they said their dogs. I ran to the van and used my shirt to open the side door and got the two dogs out. I also grabbed the lady's purse. ??? I kept running back and pulling out their belongings until it got too hot and the tires blew. When I stopped shaking and sort of realized what happened I had burns on my hands and shins and I was only wearing a bra and jeans. My shirt was around my hands. It simultaneously made me feel capable and good for helping, but scared that I sort of auto piloted it all. The paramedics said it was pure adrenaline. If there had been people in there I would have worked until I roasted to get them out.

Aw man you're talking about the blue angel dude 😢 blue angels originated where I live so everyone's really upset. He left behind a wife and two little babies .

The Air Force pilot did survive... He got the plane to a remote area and ejected. The Marine pilot for the Blue angels is the one who died in the crash.

I grew up watching those guys practicing from my back yard in San Diego. I used to love going to the airshows they put on.

I honestly don't think anyone can answer this question. When faced with death, who knows what anyone would do? We may say one thing, but when we finally confront it, we might do the exact opposite.

I have saved a life but managed not to lose mine at the same time. I didn't know until then how I react in a situation. Turns out I don't give my own life much thought when I see something I can prevent

I would love to be able to say that I would save others lives, but in the moment I just don't know how I'd react. I figure my gut instinct would be to protect myself... Especially since I'm pregnant.
