Service dog?

Hello ladies, I suffer from PTSD and was thinking about getting a service dog. How do I get one? How much does it cost ect. I live in a government own apartment complex and one rule is that we aren't aloud to have dogs on the property period but I know that if I have a service dog that they have to let me keep it.

Go pick a dog any dog you want. Then Get online and search "register service animal" and the us dog registry should pop up. Fill out the forms. It costs like $80-100. Then no apartment can tell you you can't have the dog. It's illegal. But as an emotional support animal, it doesn't have rights to public access. Only housing and airplanes. You'd have to get it fully registered and trained as a full on support animal otherwise and that takes time and money.

Hey beautiful! I actually train service dogs for a living, so I have a few answers & pointers for you :) 
First of all, I'm sorry to hear about your ptsd, but having a service dog would probably be a huge benefit to your life. 
To get the process started, you need a dog. Many rescues will gladly help place a dog with you, based on the dogs personality.. you need something big enough to do tasks for you (I will touch on this later), with enough concentration to pay attention to only you, no matter how many people are around, and you need something with a brain. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND German shepherds, Labrador retrievers, and golden retrievers. In that order. 
In order for a dog to be certified as a service dog, the dog will have to have a certificate from a state recognized trainer, stating that the dog can adequately perform atleast two tasks for you, and that the dog has been through obedience training. 
Tasks that can be trained for ptsd are endless, but a few of the better known tasks are : interrupting a panic attack, reminding the handler to take medication, or guiding the handler out of a specific situation or place.
Having your dog certified as an emotional support animal is not recognized as a service animal, and therefore isn't allowed where an actual service dog would be. 
The cost varies, and ranges anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000. You truly get what you pay for when it comes to this type of training.
