Why??

Why is it that when something big happens in a popular place (Florida massacre, Paris massacre, sandy hook, etc), it is SOO widely talked about. The whole world knows about it and grieves. But yet there are other countries losing hundreds of innocent people by the day (like Syria) and no one talks about it or cares? I'm in NO way trying to take away from what happened in Florida so don't hate me! It was very tragic. But I'd just like to know why people think this happens?

I think a lot of it is the shock factor too. These things don't happen every day in the cities you listed so it is "breaking news" but deaths that happen every day in Syria are (Sadly) part of the norm.

The media and what we are exposed to. A lot of people only see/hear what's reported on mainstream news. Plus we are seeing a gun control agenda in America right now so mass shootings will be reported more than anything else.

A lot of it is because the media only wants us to care about that to distract us from all the other issues (in my opinion) and also because some stuff has been going on for a long time and so they've just lost interest in caring about it and reporting it

I think the media plays a large part, but also i think people care more when it hits closer to home. What happens every day in the Middle East is horrible, but it's a sad reality I can't even imagine. For someone to shoot up a nightclub in a neighbourhood like mine makes me think it could easily happen to me/where I live. Might sound shitty but people care more when they can relate to things.

My father in law made a good point about what makes it on the news. It's things that are extremely out of the ordinary. Like plane crashes, mass shootings, etc. These things are really rare so they make the news. Unfortunately, what's happening in places like Syria are common now so it's not really "news" anymore. Sad, but true.

It's because the news picks and chooses what they dean important. Bigger attacks in populated and popular cities are going to be the most widely talked about events.
