Animal lovers who aren't vegan

I love animals. I have a lot of pets that I take care of very well. I adopt from the shelters and volunteer there occasionally. I have recently been told that because I am not a vegan that means I'm not a real animal lover. I find this so offensive. Thoughts anyone? Posting anon because I don't want to be directly attacked by vegans. I would like to hear opinions though.
