Is it appropriate to hand make your own wedding invitations?

My fiancé and I are on a wedding budget. And so far, we've priced all the wedding invitations well above $250! I REFUSE to spend that much money on some paper that will most likely end up in the trash! So being that I'm crafty I think we should hand make them. I did a trial run and I kind of like it but feel it's a bit kid-like. What do you guys think of it? Need some help or ideas. (I crossed out our last names) should we just pay the $250 bucks or take a leap of faith and do something different?
