giving water to baby

how much water can i give my baby? she started on solids 2 weeks ago. recently i noticed she's been straining to poop. her poop  changed as well to solid but still mushy. but this afternoon, she was straining so bad that her face turned red. she cried so much. baby daddy suggested giving her more water, but im not sure how much or if i should. she finally managed to poop but it was almost hard. poor baby
