Why does it seem like miscarriage is common on Glow?

Question

Rate of miscarriage is 10-15% for women under 30, and 15-20% for women under 35. On glow it feels like much higher than that? It can be very scary but should remember that the vast majority of pregnancies are not going to end in miscarriage. Why does it seem that way on Glow?

Because miscarriage is still something people don't really talk about, and the app is a community of people who understand and are willing to listen.

Because miscarriages ARE common. Very common, actually. It's just that no one talks about them. They happen to about 1 in 3 women but no one ever talks about it.

It probably seems higher on glow because women feel free to discuss it here.  Out in the "real world"  it's still a trap subject,  not to be brought in the open,  don't tell anyone you're pregnant until you've passed the first trimester just in case.

I personally feel that it should be something discussed in the open.  So many women go without the support they need because we're "not supposed to talk about it"

To be honest, I was never really scared or had thought much about a miscarriage and since having this app and seeing it mentioned so frequently it is literally always in my mind 24hrs a day.

Please note I am not meaning for people to take it as don't talk about it, I am just explaining how it also effects those who have not experienced a miscarriage.

I agree the glow is a safe place for it to be discussed.

It's also a fertility app, so I think a majority of users have struggled or are struggling with conception and pregnancy, so the general population of users is not the same as a poll of all women.

I think the reason I am so set on using apps and tracking what's happening in my body now is because my very first pregnancy was a miscarriage. I've had two healthy pregnancies since then and I'm now 5 weeks pregnant with our third. So, maybe the women using the app have experienced loss so they're looking for a way to track their new pregnancy and talk with women who have experienced similar things. Also, not to alarm you, but only one of my friends (we're all in our mid to late 20s) hasn't had a miscarriage. That's 6 out of 7 women, so I think it's a little more common than we think. I hope that makes some kind of sense. Lol

Even if the rate is 33%, that's 33% of all pregnancies, so 1 in 3 pregnancies not 1 in 3 women. This includes ones that happen before a missed period. The statistics don't come from self reporting, my MIL has been an obgyn for 40 years and had to explain this to me b/c I was so freaked out!

One of my really close friend's had a miscarriage and she never told me until she got pregnant again. It makes me sad.  I wished she woulda told me. But it's her business. At any rate, I agree with others on here. I don't think it's that it's higher on Glow I think women feel more free to discuss on an app. We aren't all face to face. This is a type of community where we can help one another and support one another. Although, on some posts I've seen quite the opposite. But I'd hope in a tragedy like a MC people would be supportive.

I used to think this when I first joined glow to the point it made me feel uneasy and I was ready to delete the app... I remember saying to my husband that I wasn't to keen on reading about it because after all I had two healthy pregnancies previously and it wouldn't happen to us ....  then I suffered a miscarrage .... I am grateful now that I had the knowledge to notice what was happening and get the help I needed... it is one of the most horrific things to suffer and I realise now that no matter how short a life is beautiful and it should be wider known .   my first appointment with the midwife we discussed where and how I would have my baby.. not once was it mentioned to me that I could loose my baby.. 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarrage us woman need to stick together through good and bad and educated one another.. that's only my opinion.. wishing you all healthy pregnancies and to all who have lost much love x
