Not being able to eat or drink during labor?

Is that still the practice? I can do without the food, but I hate being thirsty! I drink so much water throughout the day, I couldn't imagine not being able to drink.

My understanding is eating might cause you to poop, and drinking will make you throw up.. is this why they don't let you do either?

It may be standard practice for your hospital but it isn't evidence-based. They thought it increased aspiration risk if a c-section is needed. Anesthesia is way better now than in the past. I can't imagine going so long without something to drink or a snack. Depends on the hospital and the doc. Some won't even allow ice chips or water, others bring you a normal meal and snacks. Call your local hospital and ask!

With my hospital if youre low risk they let you eat whatever you want and drink what you want. My friend had taco bell while in labor😂😂 as i dont think i will push my boundaries that much i imagine im going to want chocolate pudding or berries to keep me fueled. And they give us juice, gatorade, water, ice chips for drinking but we are allowed to have soda. As long as youre low risk. My friends and i are all low risk.. I dont have any high risk friends so i dont know that side of the story lol.

Mine doesn't allow anything and would rather hook you up to an IV drip for fluids even though you're able to still drink and drains your bladder with a catheter...

Well, my information did come from mothers who labored 10-20 years ago so clearly/hopefully that information is outdated.

I'll be sure to check with Dr and ask what to expect :)

It depends on your hospital. At my hospital tour the l&d nurse told us that they'll go so far as to to bring me and my husband snacks . at certain times they deliver freshly baked cookies to my room. And theyll give me three meals in l&d if i want it and im in the there that long. If u have not gone on your tour yet. I would suggest going. My tour was EXTREMELY informative and answered every single question i had without having to ask.

At my hospital you can have clear liquids. Juice, water, broth, jello etc. and my doc said eat at home before I get to the hospital.
