Female Doctor visits

So I'm absolutely terrified to go and see a doctor for my friend downstairs. I really would like to get put on birth control for my period. But I'm terrified to go to the gynecologist. And yes I know I should have gone when I started my period. But I always managed to talk myself out of it. And my mom always makes me cry when we bring it up. She doesn't understand that it's a scary thing for me. So can some just explain what's going to happen? Because I really need to go.
