Going on a break - always a disaster?

I was watching friends yesterday, when Ross and Rachel take a break from ther relationship and he sleeps with someone else. It got me thinking:
Does going on a break ever help? Does it make things worse? Have you ever been on a break? What happened next? Do you regret it? How did it affect your relationship?

When someone would tell me "we need a break" what the really meant to me was: "I don't want to date you anymore and would prefer to be single at the moment. But if this single thin doesn't work out as I planned, I would love to have you as my back up plan".

If you need a break in a relationship, it's probably a sign you shouldn't be together.

I don't believe in breaks. You either sit down and talk out our issues with me, or you can get out of my life.

When something is broken, you fix it. You don't run away and "take a break".

When my one ex said "we need to take a break so I can get settled into college." I went "Ok then we are done."

Why? He wanted a free pass to sleep around and I didn't want a one sided relationship.

What happened? He ended up getting 5 girls pregnant and now pays out the ass in child support.

My SO and I have never needed a break from our relationship. We talk about what is bothering us, come to a solution we both can live with and move on. Besides when we need a "break" it normally means I am holed up in the bedroom or he is holed up in the computer room and we need a break from the world for a bit, not each other.

Personally, a break isn't an option for me and any of my relationships. If someone needs to take time away from me to "evaluate" our relationship, that's not one I want to be in. And for the breaks that include being able to be with other people, that's not a break. That's a break up. And an easy way out.

It always depends on the people involved. My husband and I took a break for about a month when we were dating several years ago. It was a mutual decision, which is very important in going into that type situation and after we had gotten back together, things were great. We had ground rules for our break, it wasn't the "end" of our relationship, we just needed time apart to think about what we wanted in our relationship. I don't regret that break at all and would do it again if presented the same opportunity back then. Breaks aren't always a disaster, but they can be if they aren't a mutual decision that's actually thought out and discussed prior to happening.
