Does baby HAVE to burp?

Question

7 weeks old. SOMETIMES no matter what I try, she will NOT burp! I try for 10+ minutes and either she is too sleepy or she just spits up instead of burping the whole time I try.

I try holding her over my shoulder, chest to chest, over my knees, sitting up, football hold, I've tried the "lay down-sit up (repeat)" trick... Nothing works! All I get is a messy baby from all the spit up and TONS of laundry!

Any thoughts, tips, or anyone else in the same boat?!

PS- She is not fussy, is gaining appropriate weight, and has plenty of wet/dirty diapers.

Same here...No matter what I try and for how long, she just will not burp. My daughter is formula fed and 2 months old...she eventually toots it out!

My son (6 weeks) doesn't burp sometimes either. I try for a little while and then just let him be. We are Breastfeeding though and I've heard that breastfed babies don't always burp. Sometimes he'll end up burping on his own later or he'll fuss and in the process of trying to figure out what's making him fuss, I get the burp that he never did earlier. Other times, he just never burps. Hope that at least helps to know other babies are (or should I say aren't 😉) doing it too.

Most people put their babies head propped by the shoulders to pat the back, but try lifting them higher so that their belly is on top of your shoulder to add some pressure. If that doesn't do the trick, I put my daughter's head by my shoulder and walk up and down the stairs.

Are you breastfeeding?  I've heard breastfed babies don't need to be burped as much as bottle fed babies...

If she's breastfed, they don't get as much air when they feed so they don't have as much need to burp.
Either way if she's breastfed or bottle fed, if she's not fussy I wouldn't worry about it. She would let you know (loudly) if her belly was upset from the gas.
Lucky you! My baby will just scream until she's blue in the face if she has gas 😭

My daughter never burped much the first few weeks. If she did burp, it took a lot to bring it up. Now she's 9 weeks and burps more but she usually brings it up herself just by being out on our shoulder. I've heard this is the age where they get better about that.

My baby wouldn't burp a whole lot either, his pediatrician said to try for 10 mins and If after that he didn't burp then it was fine to lay him down. Now, spitting up too much is another issue it could be reflux. I've been using probiotic drops and it helped my baby with burping (now he always burps) and the spitting up too.
